Natural Hair Growth & Protein
Protein is so important for our hair, but more importantly, it is needed for our bodies overall health. Protein is used as the building blocks for our blood, skin, bones and more. It is used to repair and build tissues in our body. Without adequate amounts of protein in our diet, our body would suffer and our hair would suffer as a result of that.
Protein is especially important to our hair because our hair is made up of 19 proteins. Our hair is made up of a specific protein called Keratin. Keratin is the main structural material for the outer layer of our hair, skin and nails. About 91% of our hair is made up of protein, which is why it is very important that we have adequate amounts of protein in our diet
Are You Getting Enough Protein In Your Diet? There are two ways of figuring this out.
The first calculation:
If you are on a standard diet and you have no dietary restrictions or goals.
For example if you work a 9 to 5 and you don’t have any health concerns, this calculation is for you.
Calculation # 1:
Take your goal body weight in either KG or Lbs.
Once you have that number:
If you measured your self in KG multiply the number you got by .8
If you measured your self in LBs multiply the number you got by .37
Example:
I weigh 130 lbs.
I am going to take 130 and multiply it by .37
The number I get is 48.1.
Therefore, I need 48.1 grams of protein in my diet, if I am on a standard diet.
The second calculation:
If you are on a strict diet and you have dietary restrictions.
For example if you are trying to build muscles or lose weight, this diet is
Calculation #2
You need to get 20 % of daily calorie intake and then divide that number by 4
In order to figure out how many calories you need to per day:
Find a calorie calculator online (I demonstrate how I use one in the video below)
Then you take the amount of calories you need to consume per day and you multiply that number by .20 (which is 20%)
Example:
Step 1
I need 1630 calories per day
1630 x .20 (20%)
=326 (20 % of my daily calorie intake)
Step 2:
Then you will need to divide 20 % of your daily calorie intake by the number 4.
We need to divided 326 by the number 4
We divide by the number 4 because there are 4 calories in 1 gram of protein
326 divide by 4
= 81.5 grams of protein
So if I were on a strict diet, I would need to be consuming 81.5 grams of protein in order for me to get the adequate amount of protein in my diet.
I know this may be confusing, but I show you step by step ow to calculate how much protein you need, in this short video.

Protein puts strength into our hair and without adequate amounts of protein in our diet, our hair will be weak, fragile and break off.
If you have noticed an excessive amount of shedding and hair thinning, it could be because you are deficient in protein. If you are protein deficient, there are two things that you must do in order to get strength back into your hair strands and to keep your hair on your head.
The two things that you must do are:
1) Add more protein packed foods into your diet
2) Do protein treatments once a month or bi-weekly (depending on how weak your hair is)
